The Lady Churchill Pen has been designed to honour Clementine Ogilvy Spencer Churchill, the wife of Sir Winston Churchill. Over 56 years of marriage to the Greatest Briton, she loved him, supported him and helped make him the man he was.
Included with the pen is a facsimile of a hand-written letter dated 27 June 1940 in which she reminds him of a maxim that he was fond of quoting "On ne règne sur les âmes que par le calme" (we only reign over souls through calm); an essential leadership skill he may have temporarily forgotten.
It is an remarkable letter in so many ways. Winston had only been appointed the Prime Minister on 10 May 1940, and at a time when Nazi Germany seemed to be invincible and Great Britain was at its Darkest Hour. The pressure on the man must have been immense. She knows he needs help, and so she starts her letter by saying "My Darling, I hope you will forgive me if I tell you something that I feel you ought to know".
The letter is a wonderful example of how she supported her husband throughout their lives with love and wise words. She was undoubtedly his most important advisor.
