D-Day - 80周年ポピー・ペン

ヨーロッパ戦勝記念日、通称VE-Dayは、1945年5月8日火曜日、連合国がドイツ軍の無条件降伏を正式に受諾したことを祝う日であり、ヨーロッパにおける第二次世界大戦の公式な終結を意味する。

この記念すべき日から2025年5月8日で80年を迎えるが、ナチス軍事力終焉の始まりとなったのは、連合軍が史上最大規模となる海・空・陸統合作戦を開始したD-Day、1944年6月6日であった。作戦名「オーバーロード作戦」と呼ばれたノルマンディー上陸作戦は、占領下のヨーロッパを最終的に解放する11か月に及ぶ戦役の始まりとなった。

ドワイト・D・アイゼンハワー将軍は、1944年6月6日、連合国遠征軍最高司令部から15万6千人の将兵に向けて、かの有名な「日々の命令」をしたためた。

"Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."

80周年を記念し、Conway Stewartはアイゼンハワー将軍のかの有名な言葉「The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!」をバレルに彫刻した D-Day 80th Anniversary Poppy Pen を発表した。

高密度ブラックアクリル製で、独特のダイヤモンド柄の彫金が施され、スターリングシルバー製のリングを配し、幅広のキャップバンドには品質と来歴を証明するホールマークが刻印されている。キャップトップには、かの有名な赤いポピーがあしらわれている（忘れることなかれ）。このギヨシェ彫りとヴィトリアスエナメル仕上げの美しいポピーは、スターリングシルバー製である。

世界限定80本。各ペンのバレル末端にエディションナンバーが彫刻されている。

D-Dayという呼称が、ノルマンディー上陸作戦だけを指すものではないことをご存じだろうか。D-Dayとは、あらゆる大規模作戦の開始日を示す一般的な軍事用語であり、Dは「day」を意味する。正確な日付が機密扱いであるか、あるいは未確定の場合に用いられる呼称である。ノルマンディーが最も広く知られているが、第二次世界大戦中には他にも数多くの重要なD-Dayが存在した。
